Marine Science studies in our country are mainly based on pollution monitoring studies. Contrary to these conventional studies, our department strives to combine Marine Sciences and Engineering with basic sciences and other fields of science. For this purpose, we concentrate on utilizing and protecting our seas. In the light of this vision, using novel or already existing polymeric materials in the field of marine technology, developing new treatment techniques to protect our seas, obtaining biotechnological products from our seas and the production of new nature-friendly chemicals to protect aquatic life are our main priorities. Furthermore, our department also tries to find answers to various problems for the chemical industry by producing novel domestic products.

We managed to obtain various national and international patents for different products and our studies have also been published in important international journals.

Our department, which is constantly striving to renew itself in terms of its study subjects, also studies current pollutants (microplastics, examination of pharmaceuticals, algal toxins, etc.) in monitoring studies. Moreover, we are also currently studying the synthesis of new absorbent materials for passive sampling, which is among the new monitoring strategies, and it is aimed to create new products that will add value to our country in the field of marine sciences. In addition to these innovative studies, our department examines the sediment-sea-atmosphere biogeochemical cycles and continues to work on determining the levels of inorganic (metal and ions) organic (PAH, pesticide, etc.) pollutants in these three matrices. We are also working on fingerprinting studies and the elimination of pollutions that are originating from ships.

Marine Geology and Geophysics

Marine Geology and Geophysics Department provides scientific research and graduate education for students who have graduated from marine geology and geophysics and engineering programs. Our main goal is to train competent, qualified, environmentally friendly, open to development, flexible and fast decision-making, self-confident, virtuous, highly qualified scientists, and researchers. Therefore, all students participate in marine geological and geophysical research under the supervision of faculty members (2 professors, 2 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, 1 research assistant). There are various sediment sampling and analysis devices in the marine geology laboratory, and magnetometer, side-scan sonar, Sparker and Chirp seismic systems in the geophysical instrument room. Its main fields are geological surveys especially in shelf areas, coastal environments and lakes, geochemical processes, detailed bathymetric mapping, magnetic prospecting, seismology, underwater acoustics, seismic stratigraphic and structural analysis, paleo-environmental and pollen analysis. Multidisciplinary studies are also carried out with other basic sciences such as geomorphology, navigation, hydrography, oceanography, archeology, chemistry, and biology.

Marine Management Department

Marine Management Department aims to fulfill the need for ever increasing qualified personnel in Turkey as a result of increasing merchant marine capacity, the amount of cargo handled in ports and terminals, operations conducted in shipyards, drydocks and the services provided to ships via ship agencies fueled by its economic growth.

As Turkey relies heavily on sea trade to realize the vast majority of its export and import activities, the need for qualified personnel rises day by day and the need for experts with good fundamentals, who are able to take initiative and improve themselves, is expected to rise in the medium and long term.

Graduates enjoy employment opportunities in maritime industry more specifically in marine technical and trade administrations, ports and terminals, ship agencies, ship insurance companies, marine and port management, port authorities, marine tourism, marinas, fishing ports, port management in inland waters, shipyards, dry docks, ship agency services, logistics and customs related institutions.

Post graduate education and research projects in Marine Management Department are conducted in two separate programs. Those are:

1-      Marine Economics Program

2-      Marine Policy Program
